Adjust your make-up for the spring season

We all love the sensation when springtime enters and brings along its bright light and longer days. This time of year is also a wakeup-call for most of us. The sunbeams reveal our dirty windows and the dust that has been hiding in the dark for months. We feel urged to open the windows, wash away the signs of winter and prepare ourselves for the lovely time ahead.

A look in the mirror also tells us that we could need a little “brush up”. After having spent a lot of time inside during the winter, our skin often looks pale and dull, but the first aid make-over is easy at hand. Every spring the different make-up brands come up with a huge variation of bronzing products to take care of our ghost-like complexions.

After your daily cleansing and moisturizing routine, apply a tinted moisturizer. Alternatively you can mix some oil-based foundation with your moisturizer. It will give you a fresh and natural teint. If you want you can choose one with light reflecting particles to add a bit of extra glow and reduce the signs of ageing and fine lines. These particles are not to be confused with shimmer, as shimmer is meant to give the skin a more sparkling, but less natural look.

A good concealer is a must in order to hide dark circles under the eyes, and to lighten other parts of the face that often have an uneven skin tone, such as between the eyebrows and around the wings of your nose. When our skin is pale, some redness often appears on our cheeks, and the concealer will cover it without making the skin look matt and “made up”.

The combination of bright sunlight and pale skin often makes foundations look too heavy. Use it for parties and for evening looks only. If you feel that a tinted moisturizer doesn’t give you enough coverage, try a mineral foundation. Just make sure you use the right technique, and be aware of the different qualities on the marked. Some so-called mineral products are only mineral based, not pure minerals, and contain talc and other ingredients that can clog the pores.

For a natural look, add some blusher in a pink-bronzed shade to the centre of your cheeks and on your eyelids. Towards and during the summer when your skin tone is darker, you can use more of the bronze- shaded blushers. Remember that a blusher is only meant to give you a hint of colour and to shape your face slightly. We often tend to use too much and end up looking more like Indians getting ready for war. Liquid and cream blushers are very easy to apply and melt nicely onto your skin. If you would rather use a powder blush, make sure you have a high quality brush, and apply the product with light strokes. For the last few years we have seen a tendency towards blushers with light shimmer effects, but if you prefer a total matt make-up, you should be able to find a matt blusher as well.

A bronze powder is also a good thing to get. Their pigments are not as compact, and can therefore be used all over the face, décolleté and shoulders. Make sure that you use a big powder brush to avoid uneven, stripy patches.

Last, but not least- get your self a smashing lip gloss! Glossy lips have been trendy for a long time and always look fresh. Find a couple of shades that you really like and wear them as often as your lips are dry, or you want to touch up your make up.

A funny trend that is to be seen almost every spring in clothing as well as make-up is the inspiration from the early sixties. The pastel colours reflect the light colours in nature, but also the happy mood we associate with springtime. In many ways the sixties represent this. Try a fresh light blue eye shadow and a thick black liquid liner to create a real look of that era. The lips should be light, and also have that pastel touch, so a lip colour in a nice pink tone will look fresh and go well with pale skin.

To complete your make-up, you will obviously need a good mascara. Be aware that the sixties-look demands a more powerful volume mascara, whereas you should choose one with a smaller brush for a natural look.

Whatever make-up trend you decide to use as a part of your “Wash away the winter and get ready for the summer-regime”, let the springtime inspire you! Apply some colour to your face, put some gloss on your lips and go out there to glow along with the sun beams!
Celebrate the sun and your self!
