STORY TIME
AUTUMN REUNION

November 2008
It is dark in my bedroom. It is so dark that I can not tell the difference if
I have my eyes closed or open. Without any light, it is difficult to believe
that the nature is filled with beautiful autumn colors right now, but I know
that it is.
It is silent inside the house. Everyone but me is asleep. From outside I can
hear a lot of sounds. The few leaves left on the trees are taking their last
pirouettes before they let the wind bring them to new places and new adventures.
It gives the wind a distinctive sound that also tells me autumn is around.
Then, there is the sound of rain knocking carefully on my window. Maybe it has
some old friends from way back inside my house and they would like to see them
again. Maybe some water drops they once played with in the big ocean is now in
our toilet?
The rain turns into tears on my window as I don’t open it. I would like
to open it, but it is too cold. And mum does not like it when the floor gets
wet.
I turn around and try to fall asleep.
But I can’t stop feeling sorry for
the sad rain that never gives up knocking.
I get out of bed. The floor is cold. I have to find my slippers from last winter.
I fetch my warmest clothes from the closet before I open the window. I have to
just let some of it inside, or else I will not sleep tonight. But the rain just
hits the floor instead of the window, and it still doesn’t look very satisfied.
I have to help it cross the floor and into the bathroom! Mum has a perfect, empty
flower box in the basement, and I run to fetch it as soon as I remember. I put
it under the open window, and the rain stops crying at once. Instead it happily
sledges its way down to the flower box. Now I can go back to bed and wait while
the rain gathers. Tomorrow I will bring it to its long lost friends. Mum will
be happy that I kept the floor dry and probably very proud of my thoughtfulness
for the rain. I close my eyes with a smile on my face. Now I can fall asleep.
