International Children’s Digital Library

Children's librarians can play an important role in combating cultural isolationism through the selection and promotion of translated children's books from other languages into English. Translations can serve as an important medium for sharing the similarities and differences between various cultures. Although translated books have often been accused of not traveling well, the number of translations available today are such that we have an increasing opportunity to include quality translated literature in our collections.

The mission of the International Children’s Digital Library Foundation is to excite and inspire the world's children to become members of the global community – children who understand the value of tolerance and respect for diverse cultures, languages and ideas -- by making the best in children's literature available online.

The simplest way to use the ICDL is to just read a book. Pick one of the featured books from the home page, search books using Simple Search. Then read away – for free and anonymously. Or you can create an account to keep a bookshelf of books you like and set various personal preferences.

Many of the books in the ICDL are available in more than one language. Use these books to study a language you don't know. Use the Advanced Search screen to search for books in two or more languages. Then try reading in the language you are studying. If you aren't sure you understand the page completely, switch that page to the language you do know with the popup menu underneath the page.

The ICDL is a non profit corporation and works with children from around the world in a variety of capacities. Children help design and test the ICDL interfaces, review books, and share their impressions about the role of books, libraries, technology, and culture in their lives.
ICDL researchers currently work with nearly twenty children at five different international sites.
