in Switzerland Vocational school (Berufsschule/ école professionnelle/ scuola professionale) is open to successful secondary school graduates who have signed an apprenticeship contract with a host company. The latter is responsible for their on-the-job training. The off-the-job training is imparted by the vocational school, which is usually attended once or twice a week, depending on the chosen occupation. Two-year vocational education and training (VET) programs lead to the issuance of a Federal VET Certificate ( Eidgenössisches Berufsattest / Attestation fédérale de formation professionnelle/ Certificato federale di formazione pratica). These are less demanding training programs, suitable for young people who are interested in learning certain trades, but whose school performance does not allow them to join the three-year program. This option is still open after the two-year education is completed. Three-year and four-year VET programs lead to the issuance of a Federal VET Diploma (Eidgenössisches Fähigkeitszeugnis/ Certificat fédéral de capacité/ Attestato federale di capacità). During the three-year or four-year VET program, students have the option of attending general education courses to prepare for the Federal Vocational Baccalaureate Examination (Eidgenossiche Berufsmatura/Maturité professionnelle fédérale / maturità professionale federale). Vocational education and training is also open to adults wishing to earn VET credentials. The lists of open apprenticeship positions are available on respective cantonal websites, e.g. http://www.ag.ch/lena/de/pub/ Nowadays most host companies expect their applicants to do an aptitude test (Eignungstest / teste d’aptitude/test d’idoneità). These tests are conducted either by the prospective employers themselves or by independent firms (e.g. Multi-Check, Basis-Check etc) and check job-related knowledge and skills. Subject matter varies by occupation: verbal ability, general knowledge, mathematics, technical understanding, and ability to concentrate.
