Niederbauen
by: Natalie Ehrenzweig, Aug.09

I believe i can fly
Again in this months issue i will suggest to stay close. Because even in the middle of Switzerland, on the Niederbauen, you can travel far away.
First the getting-there can be a real adventure, if you want it to. Take the boat from Lucerne, or the train and the postbus. Your goal at the end of the journey Emmetten. Exactly, the place you might know as a skiing-destination in winter.

But no. Don’t take the first cable car. That one leads you to Stockhütte where the skiing area is. Follow the road a few meters uphill and take the cable car to the Niederbauen. But allow you – and your family or friends? - to spend at least one night up there. The Berggasthaus Niederbauen offers affordable accomodation and really good food. And, for the lazy ones, the hotel is basically at the end of the cable car.

Once you got there, you got to leave. For at least a walk. Or even a hike up to the peak of the Niederbauen (ca. 1 hour one way). If you are not up for a hike, then you at least got to visit the alp Tritt, about 10 minutes walk (uphill to the left). The family that runs that alpine farm is George and Vrene with her two boys. George is from Libanon, Vrene from Switzerland. Four month a year they run the farm on the Niederbauen, the rest of the year they live in Libanon. When you sit there in the sun, drink a Schümli Pflümli, eat Vrene’s homebaked cake and maybe, if you are lucky, listen to the Schwyzerörgeli-Music, ask them after their exciting story. They will gladly tell you. And don’t forget to buy some of their cheese.

On your way to the family of George and Vrene you might pass, just behind the hotel, a few paragliders. The Niederbauen is a good place to unfold those artifical wings and fly. Maybe you might even ask for a tandem flight.
After a good nights sleep you should definately consider hiking. The 4.5 hours hike to Stockhütte is beautiful. If the weather is not so good you can also take the shorter hike (2.5 hours) straight down. This trail is also okay for people with not so good shoes.

You could of course also bike downhill. Or walk uphill instead of taking the cable car. There are also more hiking trails. Don’t hesitate to ask the family Ineichen from the hotel. They are very helpful.
