BACK TO THE ROOTS

We all once have dreamed of travelling back in time. In Ballenberg, an open-air-museum close to Brienz, you get the chance to do so. On an area of 660 000 squaremeters you can follow the development of different house-building-styles over the centuries. By strolling through the really beautiful park you see buildings in 13 groups, for example the probably oldest wodden building of Switzerland, but also buildings from the southern part of Switzerland or buildings found in the alps. But visiting Ballenberg is not a boring walk between old houses. You get to watch people do old handcrafts in originally equipped shops, like pottery, carving, basket weaving, spinning, weaving, bobbin-lace making and forging, cheese making and bread baking.

Sounds tiring for children? No way! They will not only have fun watching how things that nowadays are just bought in a shop were manufactured in the old days. They also get the chance to see – and touch – all native swiss farming animals. Over 250 different species! Maybe you like traditional dancing and music more than animals? Then you will enjoy Ballenberg, because they show a lot of old traditions like dances, markets or Brächete.

Right now, during the summerweeks, you can also attend the open-air-play „Vreneli ab em Guggisbärg“. The story is a tragic one about a unmarried woman with a child in the 18th century. It is played till the 22nd of august. You can get a museum-food-theatre-ticket for 95 francs per person.

Take a trip to Ballenberg. You will love the timetravel.
